Description of Care

Making an Appointment
Other Services

ElderConsult strongly advises a follow-up visit or visits to get the most from our services. Because elders are far more sensitive to medication, it often takes several adjustments over a period of time to determine the proper dosage for an individual. The most difficult challenge is the change of medications for agitation, especially tapering of Ativan, Xanax, and sleeping pills. The process can be complicated, and needs close supervision. Improperly done, it can result in delirium. In other cases, followup several weeks after the initial visit is a good idea after the initiation of an exercise program, or exploration of ways to improve appetite.

We frequently work as backup to the primary physician. When the initial medical situation has been resolved, we can be available to deal with issues that are difficult to address in the physician’s office, or if the patient cannot get to the office. In some cases, we can also function as a patient’s primary care physician. This depends on a patient’s needs and condition – typically, we can provide most needed care. We cannot, however, admit a patient to a hospital, and we also cannot guarantee the ability to make emergency house calls. We make every effort to get to as many patients as possible, but we are not staffed to provide 24-hour emergency coverage, particularly for acutely ill patients.

Communication with ElderConsult Providers
Communication with patients, family and all caregivers is a priority. We have a HIPPA compliant Patient Portal system that will allow non-urgent email communication through a secure system. This will be discussed at the time the initial appointment is to be made.
