Older individuals have unique medical needs. They are less physically robust. There are often underlying emotional issues, such as depression, or more apparent ones, such as dementia or delirium, that complicate treatment further. There often are chronic conditions, such as ongoing pain or limited mobility. Legal, financial or family issues may additionally complicate an already challenging situation.

ElderConsult providers are consulting physicians and nurse practitioners with specialized training and experience in the unique medical needs of the elderly. We care for older individuals, with a comprehensive approach developed specifically for them. Simply treating a specific diseases, as most physicians are trained to do, may not result in improved quality of life, but increased complications of medication side effects and overlook function, mood and conditions such as osteoporosis. ElderConsult’s techniques are based on the knowledge of experienced clinicians, who understand the unique challenges older individuals face. They incorporate a complete review of available records, physical examination, evaluation of memory and cognitive function, and screens for depression and other mood or behavior problems. We also perform in depth consultations with the patient, caregivers, physicians and family members.
Our particular expertise is in working to calm patients experiencing behavioral problems arising from conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Patients like these can be difficult to manage, especially if they are agitated or hostile. By using behavioral techniques and carefully calibrating medication, we can often improve such a patient’s condition.
Following a consultation, we provide a detailed report to the person assessed, and if desired, to a facility, physician or family. At ElderConsult, we do not simply treat diseases. We treat the entire person. For a better idea of the types of services we typically provide please see our case studies here. |
