Elizabeth A. Landsverk, M.D. , has over twenty years of experience in providing medical care to the elderly. She is board-certified in  internal medicine, geriatric medicine and palliative care medicine. Dr. Landsverk founded ElderConsult to address the challenging medical and social issues often facing older patients and their families.

Dr. Landsverk is a graduate of Stanford University. She attended University of Virginia Medical School and trained at Cambridge Hospital, Harvard University.

Following residency, Dr. Landsverk spent ten years as an internist in community practice. During that time, she became increasingly involved in the clinical care of elderly patients, with a particular emphasis on the interaction between medical care and quality of daily life. She was awarded a two-year fellowship in geriatric medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. While at Mr. Sinai, Dr. Landsverk trained with geriatric psychiatrists in a number of new techniques for the care of patients with dementia.

Following her fellowship, Dr. Landsverk continued her work in this area as Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. At UCSF, she:

  • Developed and conducted a study of techniques for improving outcomes for patients with dementia by creating a multidisciplinary team to address a complete spectrum of medical issues, from behavior to dehydration, falls, and weight loss.
  • Was instrumental in the integration of the neurology service into the nursing home environment, and the incorporation of neurological approaches into rehabilitation treatment plans and protocols.
  • Supervised the resident elective in Geriatrics, providing clinical guidance and education to other physicians.
  • Developed and led the weekly restraint round, during which she saw every restrained patient in the hospital and was instrumental in implementing techniques to remove restraints by addressing the underlying issues such as chronic pain, agitation, delirium and disorientation.

She also worked as a Medical Director for The Vitas Hospice. In this role, she partnered with local physicians to address the needs of those at the end of life to alleviate pain, agitation and discomfort through the utilization of palliative care techniques.

In addition to her house calls work, she has supervised family medicine residents from UCSF, training them in the art of house calls, participates in the Scientific Council for the Alzheimer’s Association, consults on multiple projects for the Institute on Aging, and consults for the San Francisco Elder Abuse Forensics Center.

Dr. Landsverk is a frequent lecturer on the health and medical issues of the elderly. Most recently, she was selected to be a return speaker at the 2009 Financial Planning Association (FPA) Northern California Conference, "Averting Catastrophe: Recognizing Early Indicators of Cognitive Impairment". She often speaks on treating agitation including; 2007 American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine annual conference, as well as for the 2008 FPA conference.

She lives with her family in San Mateo, California. In her infrequent spare time, Dr. Landsverk enjoys running, camping, listening to almost any kind of music, and trying to keep up with her two sons.
